Free workshop:  “Bring your Own Blues”  ElkinsPianoBhb_2017_7_MUG_resized.jpeg

Ever had the blues? Don’t we all, no matter where we come from?
Learn to tell your story in your own three-line blues verse..
Born of African American poverty and struggle, blues music came to Chicago with the Great Migration. “Barrelhouse Bonni” McKeown, piano player, teaching artist, journalist, and Austin neighborhood resident, will help everyone make up and sing our blues. Larry Taylor, blues band leader, will stop by to sing a song, tell a bit about his blues life and music and encourage us to learn more.

SAVE THE DATE: Larry Taylor’s band will perform at St. Martins June 2.

Chicago area heritage musicians still play today, often in obscure holes-in-the-wall for very little money, competing for limited spots in downtown clubs, or exporting their skills overseas. At home, blues is an undervalued cultural asset.
Crain's business magazine in January pointed out the city is losing money in not promoting this music.
Chicago's West Side has a deeply-rooted history of blues and soul music. What if we could promote it to help develop a local tourism industry?
